Establishment of Adolescent and Youth Advocates Club (AYA!) at Danborough College in GlenView 1

CASDI Trust recently set up an AYA! Club (Adolescent and Youth Advocates club) at Danborough College in Glen View 1. The club will also act as a youth hub where young able will gain access to appropriate information and services on Sexual and Reproductive Health, Mental Health and Gender Based violence. This will be achieved in partnership with established service providers through an approved referral pathway.

CASDI Trust will also build the capacity of young people through AYA! Clubs on community based advocacy strategies, as well as facilitate platforms for young people to present issues affecting them and be the gender and SRH champions of change.

A total of 56 students were enrolled under the Danborough AYA! Club. The participant profile is as follows:

According to the school authorities, the issues to be addressed by the club are key to the success of the school as well the overall welfare of its students. Currently there is no such program implemented by the school as there is no expertise within its teaching staff as well as resources to establish a welfare center for the students, therefore the club is a welcome development. Also, during the introductory address to the students, after the teaching staff was excused so that the students can articulate themselves freely, numerous issues emerged that ranged from early sexual debut, unwanted pregnancies, drug abuse, abortion, just to name a few. Currently there is no platform to address these issues at the school therefore the establishment of the AYA! Club is a welcome development.
